Dear Friends,

Santa came up with a great gift idea for our youngest this past Christmas. After hearing the funny stories of her friends stunned responses when they learned she functioned without a microwave, he got her the best one he could find… It was a combination microwave, convection oven, air fryer. She realized there might be an issue when she went to retrieve it from the package room - the box came up to her hip!  She needed the help of the doorman to get it into, and out of the elevator… She was pretty upset when she discovered it was too big to fit anywhere in the apartment, and even more upset still when she needed to get it to UPS to return it. About two hours after another friend left this week, one who, like everyone else, wondered how they heated leftovers, she and her roommate decided they would really like microwave popcorn. Turns out, they had another microwave in a box in the hall for weeks. One set it up, while the other went to the store for popcorn. Setting the clock proved to be the hardest part of “installing” their new petite microwave. Sounds like it’s been in continual use ever since. Wait until she finds out you can dye fabric in the microwave!

Wishing you a week of pleasant surprises,

Mary Beth

This Saturday (4-6-24) those in our beginning of the month pieced Saturday Sampler program will meet at 9:00am. During the session we will share information about things happening in the shop, and then we will share the new block kit and instructions for making the block. Be sure to bring your completed block from last month - we love to see them, and just as important, your new kit will be our gift when you show your completed block!

Quilts for Comfort Cases ~ a new charitable stitching project!

Stitch In #1 ~ Monday, April 8th - 10:30am-3:45pm

Stitch In #2 ~ Friday, April 19th - 10:30am-3:45pm

A little over a week ago we received information about a group looking for our support. The program, coordinated by Stacy Lee Creative, is looking to make quilts (during the month of April) for children entering the foster care system. I did a bit of research about the organization that will receive the quilts, Comfort Cases, and found they are making a thoughtful, truly significant impact. Comfort Cases coordinates and facilitates the creation of filled backpacks (each containing new pajamas, a new stuffed animal, travel size toiletries, a coloring book or journal, and a new small quilt or blanket) so that no child enters the foster system carrying what little they own in a garbage bag. The quilts required need to finish 30” x 40” (for babies) or 50” x 50” for older children. I quickly designed a few options, and then by chance received an email from Krista Moser sharing a baby quilt she had just made (she enthusiastically gave her permission for me to share the project with you!). We have set up two special sewing days to focus on the project. We would love to have you join us! During the first session you will learn how to create Krista’s baby quilt from four coordinated, non-directional print fat quarters. During the second session we will move on to several other designs. Bring your machine, sewing supplies, and fabrics to the sessions to begin your quilts, and then head home to finish them up!

“Fee” - travel size toiletries to be donated! (now that’s different - right?!)

Please pre-register so we have enough treats (of the sweet variety) and little goodies ready to thank you for your help!

New fabric ~

Sometimes just a bit of new fabric can inspire a whole project. If you’re looking to add a little whimsy, consider Wild North, new from Windham. The faces of the creatures that show up on the different prints are so very serene - I need to make them the center of the next blocks I piece! I’ll include the tree, fox and allover animal prints that complement the panel, and some of the Riley Blake PoParazzi dots that are perfect with them!

Fabric $ 13.70 per yard, panel $5.25

Many of you have asked about a local shop hop. Things are a bit different this year, but I think you’re going to love what is happening! Many of your favorite shops, us included, are part of the new All Mid-Atlantic Shop Hop. The July 1st to August 31st event will feature a special hop magazine that showcases all the shops, as well as articles and patterns, the gift of a small commemorative fabric square at each stop, a hop fabric collection, and lots of prizes. Watch for more details as we get closer to the start of the event.

Batting - Basics and Beyond

Saturday ~ April 20th ~ 10:30am-11:30am

While not seen when our quilts are finished, batting is an extremely important part of our pieces. The type we select impacts how we finish the quilt, how the quilt looks, and even how we care for the piece going forward. Fiber content, how the batt is made, and its loft are all important considerations. During this lecture, learn what you need to know to make the best possible choice for all your projects!

Fee $12.50

Please note ~ current shop hours are 10:00am-4:00pm Monday thru Saturday.
