Dear Friends,

Several years ago I selected a new color for our front door. It was a lot like selecting colors for a quilt - it needed to go with the color of the bricks, the siding, the trim,... Then I found wreaths made of faux pine, magnolia leaves, twigs, and berries that made the rich pumpkin colored doors look fantastic. The other morning my sweetie headed out for the paper. From the kitchen I heard, “Don’t do that.” followed by “That’s a stupid idea.”. I couldn’t imagine what he was trying to convince himself about. As it turns out, he wasn’t talking to himself, but to a robin. She thought one of the wreaths would be a great place to build a nest. It wouldn’t have been! The wreaths are now on a shelf upstairs…

Wishing you time to enjoy the weather, and the birds, this week,

Mary Beth

This Saturday (3-2-24) those in our beginning of the month pieced Saturday Sampler group will meet at 9:00am. We will review information about shop events, share show and tell, and then pass out the second kit in the series. Technique instruction will round out the session. Be sure to bring your first block to show so that you receive this kit as a gift!

We continue to make, and share, two blocks each week from the Quilt Builder Card Deck 3 box. Our Sew Along has been great fun so far, giving many of us a chance to really study the blocks and figure how best to piece them. You can find photos of many of the blocks we have already shared on our Facebook and Instagram. I thought a look at one of the blocks for this week, and the card/pattern used to make it, would be a good example. The block directions show the design made with lots of half square triangles. In my sewn block you will see that I have replaced the triangles on the sides of the center square with flying geese units (I figure fewer seams mean less chance for seam allowance issues!). I worked the four corners by first making half square triangles in the size needed for the corner and then modifying a corner on each by laying a square, on which I drew a diagonal line, on one corner, stitching on the line and then pressing it back to form a triangle. There are so many ways to do things - this series is a fun challenge!

Are you looking for ways to put your fabric collection to use? Fabric Cafe has been creating books that will help you with this for years. They are the force behind the 3-Yard quilt books. Each of the quilts they design can be made with just three one yard cuts of fabric (that would be for the throw size - they now include directions for larger sizes made with longer cuts of three different fabrics). It’s truly exciting to see each new design they release - each in a new book. “Go Bold With 3-Yard Quilts” is the newest to arrive. I honestly can’t decide which of Fran’s designs to begin first! I’m thinking Serenity would be perfect for the new Pat Sloan fabric group, while Modern Art would be perfect for some of the new Kaffe pieces with a little of Rob Appell’s fabric added to the mix. I hope there is a copy for you to check out when you next visit!

I know you have some fantastic finished quilts - I saw several at our block of the month show and tell! Have you ever considered entering them in a quilt show? You have a few days left to pull together what you need to fill in an entry for the Three Rivers quilt show. It’s a wonderful show - there is nothing like seeing your handiwork displayed like the art it is!

Please note ~ current shop hours are 10:00am-4:00pm Monday thru Saturday.
