Dear Friends,

I took a container of frozen, homemade spaghetti sauce when visiting my sister last month. A few weeks later I took another container with me, as she had enjoyed the first. She called to tell me she was excited to make dinner. She got the pasta going, thawed the sauce, and added it to the pasta. One tiny problem - it was chili the second time… I guess I forgot to mention it wasn’t spaghetti sauce the second time, and the beans must not have been obvious. I apologized and said I was sorry she needed to dump dinner. She said oh no she ate it, but it just wasn’t as good. Funny how things that look the same can be so very different!

Wishing you a week of small, pleasant surprises,

Mary Beth

On Saturday (8-26-23) those in our pieced Saturday Sampler end of the month group will meet at 9:00am. We’ll share a kit for the next block (I swear it’s different this time!), tips for creating the piece, and news about all that is happening in the shop. Don’t forget your show and tell - everyone loves seeing what you’ve made.

Our Stash Management club will also meet on Saturday for the last session of the current series. New organization ideas, show and tell, and a new pattern, perfect for your scrap collection, will be shared. It’s so much fun to see what you’ve made with the goodies you found while organizing your space - I can’t wait!

We were happy to greet so many of you during our I Love Fabric Days celebration last week. It was fun to see the fabrics you tagged as your favorite, and even more fun to read your reasons for loving fabric. We were supposed to select our favorite response, but we loved so many we had to pull a name from all the entries instead. Congratulations to Bonnie F. and Sharon H. - the event prize winners - each selected three yards of favorite fabric as a prize!

You know there’s a lot of new fabric when the Fed Ex driver apologizes for how much he has on the dolly… He apologizes even more later when he makes a return visit after realizing there is another box of ours still on the truck! I picked just one collection to tell you about but there are so many others!!!

Several boxes in the pile held all the colors of Antholoogy’s In Stitches collection. The glorious batiks feature a design made up of wavy lines and small dashes of color. I love the names of the colors that range from black and gray to purple, blue, green, yellow, brown, orange, red and pink. How about some Dragonscale green or Tiger orange?! Consider the whole rainbow, or just a few - you can't go wrong!

Fabric $12.99 per yard

Nancy worked with Michael Miller’s fantastic new fruit prints to create what she calls picnic quilts (shown above and below). I think they are just incredibly fun quilts that should never be put on the ground or have food shared on them! The strawberry print and coordinates make up her version of Broad Strokes from the 3-Yard Quilts on the Double book. Her version of Balance, from the same book, uses only prints from the collection. The quilts are bright and bold - perfect for summer celebrations!

Fabric $12.80 per yard, book $15.99

PS You will want to look for the new 3-Yard Quilts book, One Block 3-Yard Quilts, when you next visit. It looks fantastic! It should arrive very soon!

You might enjoy these upcoming classes - each offers applique instruction, but with two very different methods!

Hand Applique

Friday ~ September 1st ~ 10:30am - 12:30pm

Hand applique is a most useful skill to master. It allows you to create beautiful pictorial works, but can also be very useful in other applications. In class you will work on a small applique design that includes pieces that allow the teacher to share how she works stems, leaves and petals, and circles. The block will be smaller, but similar in style to the blocks in our 2022 Applique Saturday Samper project (block #2 from the medallion style quilt is shown here). You will have time for a bit of stitching in class, and leave with lots of tips that will help as you continue practicing at home.

Class fee includes pattern, fabric kit and applique supplies - please bring small sewing scissors, paper scissors, and paper and pencil to class.

Fee $24.00 Pre-registration at least one week before class is required so we have supplies ready for you.

Machine Applique

Saturday ~ September 16th ~ 1:00pm - 4:00pm

Ruth Ann is a master machine applique artist and teacher. In this technique class you will focus on the details of the technique - everything from machine set up, to the preferred supplies, to a range of different stitches that will work. The pieces her students share are stunning, your machine applique can be too!

Fee: $22.00 (supply list will be shared when you register for class)

Please note ~ current shop hours are 10:00am-4:00pm Monday thru Saturday.
