Dear Friends,

We’ve had great fun visiting different nurseries this spring. My favorites are always the ones we’ve not visited before. A trip quite a ways south, and a bit east, landed us at a neat place  whose green houses climbed a hill. There were lots of glorious plants I recognized, and many I didn’t. I couldn’t resist a funky looking sedum (to say nothing of the flowers and shrubs that already filled our wagons!). Donkey's Tail sedum has pale green trailing shoots made up of interlocking plump, little leaves. The interlocking leaves remind me of necklaces I’ve had in the past. As we loaded the truck with plants, we realized the Donkey’s Tail was too delicate to put on the flat surface in the back. My sweetie decided hanging it from the hook behind him would work best. As we headed down the country road, I saw the plant begin to swing. As it made an ever bigger arc, chunks of the plant began to rain down. At the first stoplight I had him snag the plant, a true contortionist move, and hand it over. For the rest of the trip I held it steady on one knee to preserve the shoots. Have you ever tried to get out of a pickup truck, a tad stiff after not moving a muscle for forty miles, no hands, while holding something “breakable”?! The plant now sits in a place of honor on my deck - we’ll see how long I can keep it alive. Did I mention I’m a terrible gardener?

Wishing you a week of fun adventures,

Mary Beth

PS The girl ringing up my sale said how much she liked what I had selected (I figure she may say that to everyone, but…). The wagon was monochromatic, a whole range of green plants. I had everything from very yellow green, to things that are almost blue - I keep trying to tell everyone that all greens go together!

This Saturday (6-3-23) those in our beginning of the month pieced Saturday Sampler program  will meet at 9:00am. We will share the next block in the series, Square in a Square in a Square, and review the techniques that will help you make a stunning version of the block. Be sure to bring your completed block from last month in order to receive your new kit as our gift.

Sewing Machine Day at QC

Tuesday ~ June 13th

We celebrate some holidays that others might not appreciate as much… The first patent for a sewing machine was granted on June 13th, 1790. I think the day is well worth marking, as I can’t imagine living without mine! We’ll have several of our favorite vintage machines in place for you to study, and there will be a chance to win a machine themed goodie basket. All in all, a fun tribute to the first modern appliance!

Jen Kingwell’s Greenstone fabric collection stopped me in my tracks at Quilt Market. The narrow color palette of ivory, green, slate blue and gray is different for Jen, as her work usually reflects a very colorful, scrappy style. Equally unique is the way the patterns are arranged. Each of twelve bolts in the collection contain four different prints that run the length of the fabric! An amazing way to include 48 coordinated prints (there are also four prints offered that are the full width of the fabric). I’ve seen Jen’s Daylesford shown made up in the collection (from her Quilt Recipes book). It was stunning. One of your friends that works in the shop cut pieces to make Villa Rosa’s Planters pattern with the pieces - I think it is going to be equally stunning. I honestly can’t wait to see what you make with the group!

Fabric $12.99 per yard

Please note ~ current shop hours are 10:00am-4:00pm Monday thru Saturday.
