Dear Friend,

It always makes me nervous when a phone call begins with, “Don’t worry Mom, everything turned out fine”... My youngest called last week to tell me her childhood cooking lessons (those at our kitchen counter) lacked instructions for one possible mishap. She said she was making dinner when the pot caught on fire. I imagined the water boiling away from an unattended pot, and the noodles burning. Not even close. The cute yellow tipped tongs she has used for years somehow came in contact with the hot pot, melted to the pot, and then started to burn. She wanted me to know she remembered being taught what to do if something in a pot caught fire, but I hadn’t taught her what to do if the fire was on the curved outside of the pot… If only I had known… Two of her favorite cooking utensils are now history, but she proved how efficient she is by putting out the burning plastic before the smoke detector could go off!

Wishing you a calm, peaceful, and smoke free week,

Mary Beth

How did your first block for our 2023 pieced Saturday Sampler project turn out? If you are part of the group that meets on the last Saturday of each month, we will see you this Saturday  (2-25-23) at 9:00am for session two. Be sure to bring your completed block to show so your kit is free. If you are unable to attend the session you may pick up the kit, for just $5.00 plus tax, at some point after the meeting. This Saturday will also feature the next session in our  Stash Management series, and the next construction steps display for our Christmas Cheer Sew Along. Lots going on this Saturday - hope you can make it!

2022 QC Show and Tell

Saturday ~ March 4th ~ 1:00pm

I mentioned Show and Tell last week, but thought an additional reminder might be in order. We would love to see the quilts you’ve worked block-by-block with us over the last year. Even though many are made with the help of kits, it’s great fun to see how different they all look in the end! I don’t think I mentioned last time that we also welcome quilts that took a little longer than a single year to complete (and by complete, we mean at least as far as a finished top!). Please let us know if you plan to attend so we can have a small thank you gift ready for you.

QC Pi Day

No surprise - we will celebrate on Tuesday 3-14!

I love to add circles to my pieced and appliqued projects, and thus, couldn’t let this day pass without attention! As most realize, Pi is the mathematical constant that represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. 3.14 is the rounded down number - it actually goes on, and on , and on,... While the constant was defined centuries ago, Pi Day was first celebrated on March 14th in 1988 at the Exploratorium with tea and pie. In our case, we are going to celebrate with a little bit of quilting education. At 10:30am on the 14th we will offer a class that looks at designs featuring circles, how to draw the designs, choosing fabrics and accurately piecing curves. You will also have a chance to win a quilty prize, and even enjoy a short Pi/pie quiz!

Please call, or stop in to pre-register for this free class - space is limited (you will need to bring paper and pencil, ruler, scissors, and pins to class - you may also bring your own sewing machine or choose to share one of the shop machines with other students in the class, fabrics will be provided).

I was completely enamored when shown the work of a new fabric manufacturer, Dandelion Fabric & Co. They describe themselves as a boutique fabric brand, featuring high quality quilting fabrics designed by artists from around the world. The digitally printed pieces in the collections caught my eye because they are a bit different, and most lovely. First to arrive are prints from their “Fall in Love With Fall” and “Retro Life” groups. The artwork is trendy, but as the name implies, a bit retro in feel. The fall group is offered in cream, rich gold, and plum, while the retro group includes orange, blue, brown, green and gold in the prints. These will work in almost any project - from clothing, to bags and purses, and quilts - they will be perfect!

The Among Brenda’s Quilts and Bags Trunk Show starts here next week (it runs from March 1st to 11th). Until it starts, we thought you might have a bit of fun looking for all the “trunks” around the shop… See how many you can find, add the number to an entry and then drop it in the basket for an additional chance to win a fabric kit for one of the featured bags from the exhibit! You may also enter each time you visit during the trunk show.

Please note ~ current shop hours are 10:00am-4:00pm Monday thru Saturday.
