Dear Friends,

Have you ever walked into a store for one little thing and left with a “tad” more? My youngest and her roommate needed screws in order to put together a new shelf. Her roommate made the first trip to the store and returned with the screws the salesman insisted were correct. Good thing they can walk to the hardware store, because back they went. This trip her roommate got a whole box of screws (incorrect, yet again) while she got five screws she thought would be correct. While she was distracted picking out the screws, her roommate asked if they couldn’t please, please, please get a Christmas tree. A real tree, a large tree… When youngest gave in they then needed a tree stand, lights (turns out you need more than one strand), something to act as a tree skirt, ornaments,... That trip back to the apartment found them almost stuck in the building vestibule and then the elevator with their 7’ tree. As it turns out, she will need to go back to the hardware store tomorrow for three more screws - her choice was correct, but they actually need eight. I can hardly wait to hear how much that trip costs!

Wishing you only efficient trips to the store this week!!!!

Mary Beth

PS They trimmed the bottom tree branches with a steak knife - at least they get points for resourcefulness…

This Saturday (12-17-22) will be the last meeting for our 2022 applique Saturday Sampler group members. At 9:00am we will share the twelfth block kit and setting directions for the piece. It has been great fun seeing your blocks as we have gone along - I can’t wait to see your finished quilts!

Speaking of Saturday Sampler applique projects, we’ve created a new design for 2023! We would love to have you join us for “From Our Garden”. The new quilt features bold blooms, those found in the front garden at my house, in a wide range of color - much like the actual blooms. My blocks will be worked by hand, but machine applique is another option (see information about our machine applique class later in this letter). The twelve rectangular blocks, pieced sashing, and borders will make a 76” x 77” quilt. As with our other Saturday Sampler programs, you pay $5.00 plus tax for your first block kit when registering (you receive the block kit containing foreground fabric and pattern at the first meeting), when you attend the second meeting with your completed block the next kit is free. We would love to have you join us!

QC 2023 Snow Day Surprise kits debuted a few days ago. I thought a bit of explanation might be in order. The novel kits include fabrics for the top and binding of a 60” x 60” pieced quilt. Like many historic quilts, and many contemporary ones too, the pieced blocks travel all the way to the edge of the quilt. The pattern is the surprise part. On the first day in 2023 that Quilters Corner in Finleyville, PA gets 6” of snow, those that have purchased the kit will receive the pattern via email. If we are lucky enough to remain blizzard free, the pattern will be shared on February 14th. The kit price is just $39.95 until the snow piles up - talk about a deal! We also make coordinated border kits. These are custom made to compliment the kits and offered at $45.50 (not discounted like the price of the main kit, but well worth it as your quilt will be 80” x 80” with the addition of the borders). Be sure to get your kits soon, as they do sell out.

QC Year End Clearance

December 26th - 31st

We’re planning to hold our year end clearance a little differently this year. The first two days the goodies will be packed into the classroom (any remaining items will be moved upstairs at that point). When the sale begins you will find over 300 bolts of fabric offered at deep discounts (25% off when you purchase a yard, 35% off when you buy two yards from the same bolt, or 45% off if you purchase all that is left on the bolt!) and no, they are not all holiday prints. We will also offer pre-cuts, patterns, samples and other goodies at clearance prices - I’m sure there will be things you want and need - don’t miss this one!!!

Please don’t forget to tell Santa we will be closed Christmas Eve (12-24) and Christmas day. I would hate for anyone to be disappointed! You might suggest that Santa get you a gift certificate, or maybe register you for an upcoming class, or how about a Snow Day kit, the possibilities are endless!

There’s a lot to share this time, but I can’t resist sharing a quick look at the newest fabrics from Gingiber. “Birdsong” features her whimsical drawing style in trendy gold, peach and blue hues. Of course you will find little birds in the collection, but also little birdy tracks, flowers, a tone on tone large check and a sweet sun. I love walking by the pile of bolts - they give me a little preview of spring!

Fabric $12.99 per yard

Machine Piecing Fundamentals

Saturday ~ January 28th ~ 1:00pm-4:00pm

If you started quilting with very little instruction (like I did!), you may have come to the conclusion that there must be a better way to do things! You will receive a pre-cut kit when you arrive for class, allowing you to focus on the finer points of machine piecing. We will cover proper machine tension, stitch length, accurate seam allowance, proper pinning, ironing, and general piecing guidelines for straight and bias edges.

Please bring to class ~ sewing machine in good working order, extra machine needle, neutral color thread, pins, scissors, seam ripper, paper and pencil

Fee $23.50 (includes pre-cut kit for 12” x 12” finished block)

Quilt Block Resizing

Saturday ~ January 21st ~ 10:30am-12:00pm

Renae began showing resized versions of our pieced Saturday Sampler blocks several months ago. Everyone was amazed by the pieces and wondered how she made them. You’ll be happy to hear, you can now find out how it’s done in her new class! You will look at three different blocks and figure how to make them in new sizes - both smaller and larger. Resizing a block allows you to make a smaller version for a mini quilt or pillow, or allows you to make a block larger to make a larger quilt without affecting the overall look of the pattern. This is information everyone will find useful!

Fee: $15.00 (please bring paper and pencil to class)
