Dear Friends,
My youngest handles challenging days in the same way many of my friends do, with a trip to a fabric store. Being in a new city meant having to first find one. A quick search showed the closest as only a few train stops away. After stepping off the train, she crossed the threshold of a shop she describes as about the size of her bedroom, absolutely packed with fabric from floor to ceiling. The proprietor, a grumpy older man in a suit, reminded her of New York City. The situation seemed to be scaring some customers off, but not her. When she took her fabric to the counter he made sure she understood the price per yard… When he asked if she needed anything else, it got more interesting. She explained she needed pinking shears because she had only a straight stitch machine, no serger, and really didn’t want to go to the trouble of a seam finish that would take more effort. His first response, “You know things” was followed by, “Help me pull the box out from under that shelf, they should be in there”. At that point they started talking about the sewing industry, and the impact of shipping and supply issues. As she got ready to leave he asked her to come back, and then insisted she do so. I figure another visit’s pretty much guaranteed - she’ll return the next time she’s frustrated with economics class!
Wishing you a week of interesting encounters and fun new sewing projects,
Mary Beth
