Greetings!

My youngest was producer of the last university musical before she graduated (a show she had been proposing since her first year). Her busy role didn’t keep her from getting dragged into costume production… When she realized her skills were needed, a trip to the nearest fabric store was in order. She set the first roll in her pile on the counter and said, “I need fifteen”. The man working the cutting counter looked down his nose at her and said, “We don’t sell fabric in inches, you will need to buy a half yard”. Imagine his shock when she let him know she understands how fabric is sold and she was referring to 15 yards from that bolt. There were lots of characters in the show so she needed that type of yardage from bolt after bolt. The ladies ringing the sale hesitantly mentioned the store didn’t provide bags - no problem, the students had planned ahead and pulled out bags for their 100 yard purchase! Who would have dreamed one of my youngest’s most valuable university skills would be how to buy fabric?!

Wishing you a week where your unique skills are truly appreciated!
Mary Beth

PS This letter is focused on upcoming classes - we haven’t included a class on fabric buying (maybe we should have the youngest teach one in the future!).
July has five Saturdays this year. That makes for more weekend fun, but also a bit of confusion about Saturday Sampler dates. Even though your QC date book says otherwise, our applique sampler meeting will be held on Saturday, July 23rd, while the pieced meeting will be held Saturday, July 30th. There is an updated list of event dates at the end of this letter, which you might find helpful.
QC Quilters Day Out!
Friday ~ August 19th ~
10:30am-4:00pm
We are terribly excited to share details about our summer Quilters Day Out! It has been way too long since we were last able to host one! This is an opportunity to spend the day stitching in a unique setting (an amazing professional sewing space, in a spectacular restored home in Ingram!). The day includes a kit for the colorful prints in Darlene’s new 58” x 74” Scrappy Swirls quilt (you provide the background for the piece, and select free border fabric later with the coupon received in class), instruction in the techniques used to create the piece, an event goodie bag, and a wonderful lunch! We have a truly marvelous time in this special setting - we would love to have you join us!
Fee: $130.00
Free Motion Machine Quilting
Thursday ~ August 4th ~ 10:30am-1:30pm
This introduction to free motion quilting, on your home sewing machine, will get you started with a most useful technique. You will focus on machine set up, supplies needed for the technique, and the basics of moving the layers through your machine with a smooth and relaxed motion. Jill, the instructor, says free motion quilting can be meditative and addictive - once you get started you may not want to stop!

Machine Binding
Saturday ~ September 17th ~ 1:00pm-3:30pm
Are you frustrated with traditional binding techniques? Do your hands ache after hand stitching the binding to your quilt backing? There’s another way! In this class Kathie will share her proven, totally “by machine” method. You will be as impressed with your results as judges have been when they looked at Kathie’s work! You will need to bring a small quilted piece to class so you can work the binding steps during the session.
Fee $21.00 (class supply list will be provided when you register for class)
Featherweight & 301 TLC
Wednesday ~ August 10th ~ 6:30pm-8:30pm
Your vintage treasure deserves the very best care. The good news is that with a bit of instruction you can provide much of the tender loving care yourself. A bit of Featherweight history will begin the session and then we will move on to hands-on instruction in machine maintenance. Did you know there are over 30 places on the machine you are supposed to oil at least every few weeks?! You will also learn which care issues are best left to professionals. Please bring your machine, manual if you have one, your machines’ tiny screwdriver, sewing machine oil and lubricant, and a bath towel on which to work when you come to class.
Fee: $29.50
Sewing With Your Featherweight
Saturday ~ August 6th ~ 2:00pm-4:00pm
With a little instruction, and a bit of practice, you will be using your cherished Featherweight to help construct accurately pieced blocks and entire quilts! In class you will learn about Featherweight supplies, machine set up, accurate seam allowances, and machine attachments. Actual stitching practice (piecing the pre-cut block included in your class fee) rounds out the session. Please bring your machine, neutral color thread, and scissors to class.
Fee: $19.00
Alaska
