Greetings!

Some days start off really smoothly, others… Last week I had to ask a dreaded question, “Did you see what I did with the socks I brought down?”. I figure my youngests’ eyes were rolling as she gave the usual response, “No, are you sure you brought them down?”. At that point I start to second guess myself, finally give up and go get another of whatever I’ve misplaced. In the case of the socks, three days later I pulled out the ruler drawer in my cutting table… Yup, you guessed it - socks neatly tucked in the corner. I have no idea how they got there... I’m thinking house elves!

Wishing you nothing misplaced in your sewing room this week (especially not socks!!!),
Mary Beth

PS Oops - if you get our And Sew On Newsletter, you may have already found our wishful thinking error. The header, and return address, list our regular shop hours. We so wish we could return to those hours, but we can not do so while meeting the pandemic restrictions. So sorry to get your hopes up - our hours continue to be 10:00am-4:00pm Monday through Saturday.
We’re so very excited to be starting our 2021 Pieced Saturday Sampler program, Bright Hopes, this Saturday, January 30th (because of the popularity of the program, some guests have been contacted and will begin the sampler February 6th). The stunning 78” x 96” quilt features twenty pieced and framed blocks, and both a plain and pieced border. We are offering kits (containing the patterns and foreground fabrics) in two different fabric styles - one based on a bold Kaffe print, and the other on a deep, richly colored Kansas Troubles piece. The kit for your first block is $5.00 plus tax. If you complete your block, and bring it to show on your next scheduled packet pick up day, your next kit is free! Each month we will share news from the shop and tips for block construction in your packet - this really is a marvelous way to learn more about quilting, while creating a fabulous quilt! You still have time to join the project - give us a call for the rest of the details!
I’m sorry to mention that our Stash Management Club is on hold until we can meet in person in our classroom once again. The information was shared in the last group letter, but you may have missed it. Show and tell is such a huge part of meetings, packets just don’t do it justice… I thought to lessen the blow a bit, you might like directions for a scrappy quilt. I based the pattern on a vintage piece, but have used modern techniques (thank goodness - most of us wouldn’t want to cut the piece with templates made from cardboard like in days gone by!). I planned to use scraps for the sample blocks, but couldn’t resist the new Jenn Kingwell prints - so much for using my stash!!!

I hope you are able to visit Quilters Corner soon. There are new things everywhere. We just received an adorable collection from Dear Stella. The fabrics feature cute felines getting into mischief in the laundry room. The main black and white print is complemented by ones that feature kitty faces, and others with lines and dots. Bonnie loved the designs so much, she has already stitched up a new version of Villa Rosa’s Ebb Tide! She added a tiny border of red to the black and white prints - “purrfect”!
Fabric $11.50 per yard, Pattern $2.00
Several weeks ago one of our friends asked if we would ever consider offering tips, or answering questions, in our online letters. I thanked Jolene for the great idea and planned to add the feature to the next letter… It has taken me a couple weeks to get started, but here is our first version ~
Half Square Triangle cutting tip - Several of our upcoming block-by-block programs start their cutting directions with what seems like an innocuous direction - cut squares point to point to make triangles. I realized long ago, it is harder to accurately cut the squares than might be expected. After lots of trial and error, I came up with an easy fix (and no new tool required!). Place your ruler on the square to be cut, so that it goes directly through the two opposite corner points. While holding the ruler, move to the far end of the line and cut the final inch first, and then go back to the close end and cut the rest of the line. This keeps the far tip from moving as you cut and makes for two triangles that are the same, correct, size! If you are not quite certain what I mean, ask when you next visit and I will show you how it’s done!
